Al Boom And Data Center Expansion Will Drive a Surge In Global Copper Demand
Date: Sep 19, 2024
Wenhua Finance reported on September 16 that Vandita Pant, chief financial officer of mining giant BHP, told the media that the company expects that by 2050, the surge in AI computing and the exponential expansion of data centers will lead to a 72% increase in global copper demand. Copper is essential for power supply and transmission, and is also used in cooling systems and processors in data centers.

Therefore, BHP believes that in addition to the demand driven by the introduction of clean energy, the development of artificial intelligence technology and the large-scale construction of data centers are expected to boost copper demand.

According to the mining giant, by 2050, global annual copper demand is expected to reach 52.5 million tons, an increase of 72% from 30.4 million tons in 2021.
