On August 30, Industrias Penoles, Mexico's largest silver miner, announced that its Minera Tizapa plant in Mexico State had been suspended indefinitely due to a strike by the National Mining Union. Penoles holds a 51% stake in the mine, which mines lead, zinc and copper.
In a filing, Penoles, which represents the mining, metallurgical and steel industries, cited violations of a collective labor agreement signed in April. Penoles, Mexico's largest silver miner, said it fully complied with its obligations under the labor agreement and local labor laws. It also said it would follow appropriate legal and administrative procedures to resolve the conflict. In May, U.S. trade authorities said Penoles and Mexican authorities had resolved alleged violations of workers' rights at Tizapa after Washington requested a review through the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Trade Agreement (USMCA).
